Web page designers have many methods of attracting attention to certain events that are out of the extraordinary. In this article I’m going to introduce to you a couple of those techniques.
The first and most widely used is changing the font size of headline. Examples of this can be found on CNN.com before and after the Iraq war. They more then doubled their font size in order to present news of significant importance about the war. From a 20px font CNN jumped to 48px so I guess the change was obvious for everybody. Manage your space and your whitespace
The vast majority of people are often so focused on creating a great layout that the only aspects they analyze are tables, CSS, frames etc. This is great but in most cases it leads to ignoring the basics of Web Layout, which in turn translates into mistakes that could have easily been avoided. For instance use the whole space without giving the impression that you are trying to do just that. An easy way to realize that is by using relatively sized layout sections. In this way they will contract and expand to adjust the browser window. Read the rest of this entry »
First impressions
First of all I would like to make on thing clear: Web site are an important channel for promoting a company or an individual. More and more people and businesses become aware of this, but they don’t manage to attract or maintain customers via their Web pages. The main reason for this is that their homepages can’t illustrate in as little words as possible (especially on the front page) what the company is all about. The current trend is to showcase only the latest achievements or the latest services that can be offered. Read the rest of this entry »

What is color? Well according to W3C the definition is quite simple actually. In the W3C perspective a CSS color is one of two things: a number or a keyword. In reality an artist for instance doesn’t create a painting by simply writing on the canvass the numbers or the keywords corresponding to the colors he pictured in his head. The same applies to Web designers. Read the rest of this entry »

A good article or piece that is to be posted on the web is a difficult thing to write, because of the many things that you have to get just right, such as correct spelling, good grammar and a captivating content. When writing for the Web you also have to have a good understanding of the way people read Web pages and also to have a good understanding of the hypertext itself.
Stay clear of “click here”
The most common way to manage the links on a Web page is represented by this to innocent looking little words. They are the popular choice with the vast majority of people, but that doesn’t mean that they are also the right choice. These two words have the ability to completely fragment the natural flow of any document. The only time they should ever be used on a Web page is when you advise people not to use them. The notion of link has become associated with the idea of Web page for a long time now and for good reason. Links provide the means to get from an area of interest to another in the click of a button. As Web pages go, links are a defining characteristic, because although people refer to content when speaking of a Web page, the links are the ones that allow you to process great volumes of information in a short amount of time.
The reason they are capable of doing this is because, in general, links are written in a different color from the rest of the text and most importantly, they are underlined. In this way they catch the eye of the reader. Studies have shown that when someone visits a Web page the first things they react to, by looking at them, are the links and the images. What is the main difference between a black and white newspaper and one that uses colors? It’s a stupid question really but it underlines one important aspect: colors make the difference. People are pre-programmed to respond to colors, especially to some combinations which have a stronger effect than others. Take the blue-orange association. Almost all people have a positive response to it because their sub-conscious creates a link between these two colors and the relaxing image of a sunset. Many U.S. hospitals took advantage of this fact and use light tones of blue or pink for the uniforms of the nurses because patients tend to calm down and relax when they see those colors.
